If you’re like most seasonal campers, you’ve been counting down the days until it’s time to bring your RV out of hibernation. There’s nothing quite like pulling into your favorite campground spot, setting up your outdoor rug and chairs, and getting ready for another season of campfires, fishing, hiking, and simply relaxing.
But before you can fully unwind, your RV needs a little attention to get road-ready. Taking the time to properly prepare your rig can help you avoid headaches down the road, literally.
Here’s a simple checklist to help you prep your RV for a full camping season at Breezy Hill, and make sure everything’s in working order before you hit the road.
RV prep checklist for the camping season
1. Inspect the exterior
- Check the roof and seams for cracks, leaks, or signs of wear. Look for any soft spots or bubbling under the rubber.
- Examine tires for cracks, bulges, or worn treads. Check air pressure and make sure your spare is in good shape too.
- Wash off winter dust and grime, and inspect windows and doors for any issues with seals or weather stripping.
- Don’t forget to check awnings for mold, tears, or damage from wind or storage.
2. Check your batteries
- Reinstall your batteries if you removed them for the winter.
- Check for corrosion on the terminals and clean them if needed.
- Make sure your batteries are fully charged and holding power.
3. Test your electrical systems
- Plug into shore power and test all interior and exterior lights.
- Make sure your outlets are working properly.
- Check your generator (if you have one) and give it a test run.
- If you have solar panels, make sure they’re clean and functioning.
4. Flush and sanitize your water system
- Reconnect your water lines and check for leaks.
- Sanitize the fresh water tank and lines by running a bleach-water solution through the system. Then flush thoroughly with clean water.
- Check that your water pump and water heater are working properly.
5. Inspect your propane system
- Reinstall and open your propane tanks.
- Check lines and regulators for leaks using a soapy water solution, look for bubbling.
- Test all propane appliances like the stove, oven, fridge, and water heater.
6. Service the appliances
- Run your refrigerator on both electric and propane settings to make sure it cools properly.
- Test your air conditioner and heater (especially important if you’re camping in cooler seasons).
- Give your microwave, fans, and other small appliances a test run too.
7. Check your plumbing
- Look under sinks and around toilets for signs of leaks.
- Make sure your toilet is functioning and seals are intact.
- Test your grey and black tank valves for smooth operation and any signs of buildup or blockage.
8. Stock up and clean up
- Clean your interior surfaces, wipe out cabinets, and check for any signs of pests or moisture.
- Restock essentials like toilet paper (RV-friendly), cleaning supplies, first-aid items, and non-perishable food.
- Double check your outdoor gear, grill, camp chairs, tools, leveling blocks, and more.
9. Review safety gear
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries if needed.
- Check fire extinguishers to make sure they’re charged and accessible.
- Make sure you have a working flashlight, spare fuses, and basic tools on board.
10. Update your paperwork
- Confirm your registration, insurance, and campground reservation info is up-to-date.
- Keep a printed copy of your insurance card and emergency contact numbers in the glovebox or somewhere easy to access.
